Background of the Study

Vaccine hesitancy, the delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability of vaccination services, remains a significant public health challenge in many parts of Nigeria, including Benue State. Misinformation regarding vaccine safety, effectiveness, and side effects has contributed to a growing reluctance among some individuals and communities to receive vaccines. In Benue State, this issue is compounded by social media, traditional beliefs, and rumors that fuel vaccine skepticism. This study explores how misinformation influences vaccine hesitancy and aims to provide insights into the factors that need to be addressed to increase vaccine acceptance in the state.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of vaccines for preventable diseases such as measles, polio, and COVID-19, vaccine hesitancy remains high in Benue State, with many individuals questioning the safety and efficacy of vaccines. The spread of misinformation through social media, word of mouth, and other channels has intensified concerns about vaccines. The role of misinformation in shaping vaccine hesitancy in Benue State has not been comprehensively studied. This research will investigate how misinformation influences vaccine hesitancy and its implications for public health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of misinformation on vaccine hesitancy in Benue State.
  2. To identify the sources and types of misinformation that contribute to vaccine hesitancy in Benue State.
  3. To evaluate strategies for addressing misinformation and improving vaccine acceptance in Benue State.

Research Questions

  1. How does misinformation contribute to vaccine hesitancy in Benue State?
  2. What are the primary sources of misinformation regarding vaccines in Benue State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to address vaccine hesitancy caused by misinformation in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Misinformation significantly contributes to vaccine hesitancy in Benue State.
  2. Social media, rumors, and traditional beliefs are major sources of vaccine-related misinformation in Benue State.
  3. Addressing misinformation about vaccines will significantly reduce vaccine hesitancy in Benue State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the population of Benue State, particularly those who have expressed vaccine hesitancy or reluctance. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in isolating the effects of misinformation from other factors influencing vaccine acceptance.
